Chile Pepper & Hermitage Info

Posted: September 19, 2018 in Uncategorized

Runners & Superfans,

This weekend the high school XC team will be traveling to the Chile Pepper Cross Country festival in Fayetville, AR and the jr. high team will be attending the Hermitage Invitational at Pomme de Terre Outlet Park.  Both of these are awesome cross country events and great locations so I know our kids are going to have a great time.

Saturday, September 22nd.  Bus leaves SHS @ 6:30 a.m.

DIRECTIONS: GPS and Google Map users: Use Washington County Fairgrounds, North McConnell Avenue, Fayetteville, AR.  OR you may use AGRI Park on Garland Avenue.  Don’t call for a street address because it’s in the middle of a field!  There is not one!

Traveling on Hwy. I-540, take exit 66 to Hwy. 112 (which is also Garland Ave.). Travel south on Hwy. 112. You will see Chile Pepper parking signs. General Parking is located at Washington County Fairgrounds which are all located off Hwy. 112. Transit Buses will shuttle participants from the parking lots to the drop-off point near the course from 5:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Some walking is required. Note: Please allow extra time to get to the race site.

RACE SCHEDULE: ( There are lots of races that day but these are the two we will be participating in)

  • Senior High Boy’s “El Caliente” (Varsity-5K) 11:00 a.m.
  • Senior High Girl’s “El Caliente” (Varsity-5K) 11:30 a.m.

Following the race the team will travel to Bentonville, AR and eat at Pedaler’s Pub pizza.  Cross country will be providing this meal.

Runners may want to bring some money for Chile pepper souvenirs as they usually have a huge amount of items to purchase and a new theme every year.

High school runners can expect to be home by 6 p.m.  I will have them text when we leave Bentonville to keep everyone updated.

They are calling for lots of rain this weekend so runners need to come prepared with rain gear and dry clothes.

Bus leaves from SHS @ 8:30 a.m.  Students should expect to return to Strafford by 2:00 p.m.

They will be selling t-shirts and food so kids may want to budget some money for any of those items.

For directions you need to Google: Pomme de Terre Outlet park Hermitage, MO. The park is located right below the dam of the lake.

The following is information from the race director: (we are considered small school)

The race will be run at OUTLET PARK located at Lake Pomme De Terre Dam in the Hermitage area.  The course is run on grass, trails and through the wooded area of the park.  It is a true cross country course with multiple hills and beautiful scenery.  The high school race will be a full 5K, while the middle school and Elementary/open races will be around 1.6 miles.  The Elementary/open race will once again be offered for FREE for your younger runners, fans, parents and even you coaches. Important XC dates

Runners & Superfans,

The next two weeks are going to be very busy for the cross country team and we will need some awesome parent help to get both of these events completed successfully.

AUGUST 24th – Cross Country night at the football concession stand.  We will need around 10 parents and students to help man the concession stand at the home football game on Friday August 24th.  All the work is super easy and there will be booster club officers there to help us get started.  Parents will need to be at the concession stand by 5:30 p.m. and will need to bring a baseball cap or wear a hair net.  Please let me know if you are willing to help.

The booster club has been very supportive and generous with the cross country team and we need to show them our appreciation by helping staff the concession stand.

AUGUST 30th – Parents meeting and dinner at Fellows Lake pavilion 6 p.m.   You and your family are invited to Fellows Lake on August 30th for pasta, fellowship, and prepping for the home invitational meet on Saturday September 1st.  We are looking for some amazing parents to help volunteer at our meet on Saturday and we will be signing up for the different jobs at this dinner.  All of the jobs at the meet are super easy and super fun and some of them put you right in the middle of the action.  We will need help with registration, parking, course direction, and finish line.  Strafford is known for hosting an amazing meet and that’s due to all the amazing parents who help.  Hope to see you on August 30th. (Yes, I’m bribing you with food to get you to volunteer.  The good spots go early)

September 1st – Fellows Lake 5000 cross country invitational.  Runners will need to be at Fellows Lake by 7 a.m. along with parent volunteers.  All runners will need to check in with Coach Brown to get prepared for the meet.  Parent volunteers will need to check in at the pavilion to receive instructions and head to their posts.  We will have around 20-25 schools in attendance and need a great staff of volunteers to help pull this off.

Thanks for all you do as parents and for supporting your kids in their running.  Please let me know if you have any questions and I hope to see all of you at these events.

Runners & Superfans,

I hope you’re ready to run and get this season kicked off right because I am super stoked. The first practice for high school will be August 6th from  7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. at the Max Evan’s gym.  All runners will need to have a completed physical & concussion form with insurance information before you can start  practice.  In addition to the paperwork, please make sure you have a good pair of running shoes, water bottle, watch, running log, and appropriate clothing to start running.  Cross country/distance running is very simple and involves very little equipment but you have to take care of your legs and feet and a good pair of running shoes is the best purchase you can make.  Specific running clothing, although not necessary, is designed to keep you cool and comfortable and you just look awesome when you’re out running.  I can not stress how important wearing a watch as a runner is to your overall development.  We will use watches on timed runs, intervals, and for judging pace for almost every run.  Runners who do not have a watch will be at a serious disadvantage to other runners.  Finally, I would like every runner to have a running log/journal to track their progress throughout the season.  Please feel free to use a notebook or purchased running log and fill in the information by hand.  Runners can also choose to use the STRAVA running app on their phone or computer and record their mileage electronically and follow other members of the team and their running on the STRAVA platform.  Please try to have all of the necessary items ready to go before the first practice.  Just a quick review in list form:

**Physical & Concussion form with insurance information

Good running shoes

Water Bottle

Running Journal

Middle school practice will begin on August 13th from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 a.m. in front of the Mas Evan’s gym.  Should drop off /pick up be a problem for middle school students these first few practices before school starts then runners are more than welcome to join us anytime after the first day of school. Middle school runners are expected to have all the necessary items listed above to begin practice.

Should you know of any student who might make a great team member then please encourage them to run.  Cross country is open to all students regardless of ability and is a challenging, supportive, and fun environment.  Running is good for you.

Can’t wait to see everyone,

Coach Fabro

Runners and Superfans,

Reminder that tomorrow morning is the Funn Runn for Andrew. If you are able to help or even participate we would love to see you there. Plan on meeting us around 6:45 a.m. at the Max Evan’s gym and we will get you ready to go. Thanks again for all the wonderful help and support that you have shown to the cross country team and I hope to see you in the morning.
